THC, one of the main constituents of cannabis extract, and the psychoactive part of cannabis, is known to bind to the CB1 receptor and influence how it works. The CB1 receptor appears to have a role in motivation and reward from food. It increases the response to sugary foods, and in lab tests with mice it has been shown to increase insulin resistance to diabetic levels when the receptor is overstimulated over time. There is a relationship between the ECS and metabolic syndrome, with regular cannabis users less likely to have developed this common condition.
Obese people have higher levels of CB endocannabinoid system activation in certain tissues, where it seems to affect their glucose uptake, the levels of oxygen in the tissue, and increases stress.
The role of the CB2 receptor is to regulate the CB2 receptor, and vice versa, as far as the science can show so far. The regulated and efficient communication and regulation between the two appears to be related to healthier metabolism, appetite and food consumption.
Obesity is thought to be an inflammatory immune condition. The ECS plays a role in this inflammation. It is thought that the ECS becomes disjointed and unable to properly regulate the body when there are too many adipose (fatty) tissues around.
