Equally, we want our employees to understand and trust that GW Pharmaceuticals and its US subsidiary, Greenwich Biosciences, is committed to doing the right thing. So, we have made it clear what we expect from all of our colleagues.

What Is Sativex?

Sativex (US approved name: nabiximols) is a cannabis sativa plant derived medicine. It particularly contains the cannabinoids delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) in a 1:1 ratio. THC and CBD are the primary active compounds, but it also includes different minor cannabinoids and non-cannabinoid components.

Sativex is an oromucosal spray. Oromucosal means it is administered across the mucosa of the oral cavity–i.e. the mucous membrane that lines the inside of the mouth. The active ingredients in the spray are absorbed either under the tongue or through the inside of the cheek.

Sativex has received regulatory approval in 30 countries and marketing authorization in 21 of them. GW does not distribute Sativex directly but goes through a range of country-based distributors.

What Is Sativex For?

Sativex was developed to treat MS Spasticity, pain, and chronic cancer pain. The medications primary focus in clinical trials was for the treatment of spasticity (muscle stiffness and spasm) due to MS.

Spasticity is one of the more common symptoms of MS. Spasticity can be as mild as a feeling of tightness of muscles or so severe it produces painful, uncontrollable spasms of extremities, usually of the legs. Spasticity can also cause pain or tightness in and around joints, and lower back pain.

If you’re suffering from MS, seek out medical professionals. Do not take THC or CBD without a prescription to assure legality and proper dosing.
