Cannabinoids are reported to have therapeutic abilities in the treatment of inflammatory disorders. These inflammatory disorders are found in cancer, nausea and vomiting. These are the result of chemotherapy treatment. Cannabinoids are found in the marijuana plant (cannabis sativa). Cannabinoids contain compounds such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabinol (CBD). THC is the psychoactive constituent of marijuana. It gives you the “stoned” or high sensation when smoked or ingested. CBD is the medicinal constituent of marijuana. The endogenous cannabinoid system holds two cannabinoid receptors. These are CB1 and CB2. They allow cannabinoids to bind and work throughout the body. This paper looks at how cannabinoids can have beneficial impacts in the apotosis of leukemic cell lines.

THC is the living metabolite of marijuana. THC leads to apoptosis through the triggering of complicated transmission transduction routes. The position that CB1 and CB2 receptors have taken up in this operation is less transparent. The study looked at cannabinoid receptors and their ability in the cell death of malignant myeloid leukemia cell lines. They also looked at how cell death actually occurs. Researchers came up with a normal flow, cytometric technique. This was done by calculating the communication of functional receptors. They then applied mixtures of specific cannabinoid 1 and 2 receptor (antagonists and agonists) to view their distinctive roles. Researchers have shown that THC is a strong promoter of cell death. These impacts were displayed in leukemic cell tissues as well as in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. THC did not seem to play symbolically with cytotoxic drugs like cisplatin. One of the more interesting discoveries was that THC induced apoptosis were preceded by massive alterations in the communication of genes.

However, this paper has only correlated cannabinoid receptor mRNA levels with this reaction. Researchers confirm that this is the first illustration to directly correlate cannabinoids and receptor binding with apoptosis. These results potently indicate that the cytotoxic impacts of THC are distinctive of both CB1 and CB2 receptors.It is detrimental to focus on THC in this experiment as it was greatly effective. It was able to promote cell death as early as 6 hours. THC didn’t work to its full extent on cancer cells. It also didn’t interfere with chemotherapy. Further research is needed to investigate the impact of THC in other cancer cell forms. In conclusion, cannabinoids seem to have the potential to treat Cancer and acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
