Potential of cannabidiol for the treatment of viral hepatitis.

The types of hepatitis are B and C and when viral it can lead to liver disease if untreated. Chronic hepatitis is a major problem in developing countries and will display flu like symptoms in humans. Hepatitis B has a vaccine, however the hepatitis C virus does not. Medical cannabis is now being looked at as a potential therapeutic for viral hepatitis as it has a metabolic power against other viruses. Initial studies have shown that Cannabidiol (CBD) is active against Hepatitis C but not B. CBD is a non psychoactive cannabinoid found in Cannabis plants. It is known to have beneficial effects against inflammation, brain damage, liver cancer among others with no side effects. Little is known about the antiviral properties of cannabis. Medical marijuana has been used as remedy by HIV/AIDS patients in the United States to treat their pain. This paper will look at the anti hepatitis B and C properties of Cannabis and their role in treatment for people with hepatitis.

Main Points

  • Cannabis to treat hepatitis B (HBV)
  • Cannabis to treat hepatitis C virus (HCV)

Cannabis to treat hepatitis B

The compound CBD was not active against the HBV virus but from the results of this study, it showed that it was toxic to hepatitis G cells, which were used to culture the virus. HBV is driven by inflammation and it is shown that CBD can active its anti inflammatory effects to control the virus and stop the effects of liver damage.

Cannabis to treat hepatitis C virus

CBD was found to be active against the HCV virus as long as the dosing was accurate. The results have shown CBD to be effective against viral and non viral hepatitis, otherwise known as autoimmune hepatitis. This means that patients with liver failure can use cannabis as an antiviral treatment so that the disease will stop spreading around the body.

Conclusion

The findings of this paper suggests that CBD oil could be developed further and be used as a treatment of hepatitis C and also as an anti inflammatory to control hepatitis B. Many people would be happy to hear the findings of this study as CBD could potentially be the answer for liver cirrhosis.
