Cannabinoids are a group of chemicals that are derived from the cannabis plant (cannabis sativa). Cannabis sativa is considered a dangerous narcotic in most countries because of tetrahydrocannabinol ( THC) psychotropic effects. THC is one of the main constituents in cannabinoids and is said to have an anti inflammatory effect on animal cells. Cannabinoids have been known to treat a range of problems in patients who have medical conditions such as glaucoma, vomiting and nausea from cancer, anorexia, parkinson’s disease, HIV, central nervous system (CNS) disorders and multiple sclerosis. Cannabis has a potential in CNS disorder treatment
Studies show that the cannabis plant is becoming more and more popular as a pharmaceutical and it is now consider a true bioreactor because high amounts of it can be harvested at high value. Cannabinoids are now being used in clinical trials so that its full potential in treating neurological diseases can be realised. Normal medications for CNS seem to have a range of side effects and it is now seen that synthetic cannabinoids are the way forward to relieving CNS disorder treatments. There is growing evidence from previous studies that THC and CBD have excellent neuroprotective effects because they are antioxidants and anti-inflammatories.
Cannabis is controversial in clinical use because of psychotropic effects
Medicinal cannabis is known to have putative therapeutic effects on its users, but the induction of this drug into clinical trials has been deemed controversial because of the unavoidable psychotropic effects exhibited by the THC chemical within. Medical marijuana is banned in many countries, including the united states, but only now it is becoming popular because of the therapeutic benefits it may have. Scientists now are trying to overcome these side effects so they can develop a therapeutic drugs to treat a range of neurological disorders.
