Cannabidiol and its Role in the Anti-Aging Fight

The endocannabinoid system is found in the brain and other parts of the body and it allows Cannabinoids (CBD’s) to function. CBD’s are a constituent of the cannabis plant and are said to have anti inflammatory abilities. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), another constituent of the cannabis plant, is one of the active ingredients found in medical marijuana and it gives you the high feeling. Both of these constituents have the ability to activate cannabinoid receptors (CBR’s). There are 2 main types of chemicals that the body itself produces that can mimic several pharmacological effects of THC. They are called AEA and 2-AG and these work with the CBR’s to form the enndocannabinoid system. Cannabinoids (CBD) are present in the central nervous system. This paper focuses on the central nervous system and its role in aging. It will also touch on the therapeutic potential of recently developed drugs like CBD oil and their ability to treat how the skin ages.

CBD’s are present in the early developmental stage of humans and therefore important in the maturation of the nervous system. In this study, the brains of mice, which were 7 years old, showed that CBD’s have a role to play in learning and memory. The endocrine system (ES), which is a system that includes all the glands that develop hormones in the body, can affect the central nervous system. Since the ES has massive role in the developing brain, studies show that type 1 cannabinoid receptors (CB1R) were able to prevent neuronal loss in a model of acute asphyxia. These receptors also show a dramatic increase of AEA when young mice received THC after the head trauma.

THC can protect the body against age related processes

The clinical trial in this study shows that a dose of THC in older mice will reduce inflammation, one of the contributing factor of intrinsic aging. 2-AG, on the other hand, has been discovered to be a mediator of inflammation in elderly mice, and the real nature of the interplay between the endocrine system and THC needs to be more clear. This means that CBD products, such as hemp oil, can be a powerful antioxidant in helping the immune system with the anti aging fight.

More studies will need to follow so that a broader understanding of how CBD’s: stop the signs of aging, better skin conditions and finally help with age related diseases at molecular and cellular levels.
