Former Sex & The City actor and prospective governor, Cynthia Nixon, has taken a swipe at the unequal US justice system over the use of recreational cannabis.
In a video she shared on twitter she states that: “There are a lot of good reasons for legalizing marijuana, but for me, it comes down to this: We have to stop putting people of color in jail for something that white people do with impunity.”
80% of New Yorkers arrested for marijuana possession are people of colour, while the exact same rates of marijuana use are found in the Caucasian community but result in a lower arrest rate. Nixon certainly has a point.
“The simple truth is, for white people, the use of marijuana has effectively been legal for a long time,” she continues in the video, “Isn’t it time we legalize it for everybody else?”
Nixon also goes on to espouse the economic advantages of legalising cannabis, which can be seen in the states a booming cannabis industry. The legal weed industry is producing jobs at a staggeringly high rate and is expected to overtake fizzy drinks in profit by 2030.
