Research was conducted to evaluate the role the cannabis plant has in treating epilepsy. Cannabis contains many therapeutic compounds called cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are said to have help treat inflammatory disorders such as arthritis, cancer, and epilepsy. Cannabinoids are derived from the marijuana plant (cannabis sativa) and the hemp plant.
The best-known cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabinol (CBD). THC is the psychoactive component in marijuana that gives the user a “high” feeling. CBD is purely medicinal and helps the body reach homeostasis. The endocannabinoid system consists of two cannabinoid receptors, 1 and 2. These receptors allow cannabinoids to attach to and work throughout the body. Studies have shown cannabinoids are effective treatment of seizures associated with epilepsy. We will look at how cannabinoids have a reduction effect on seizures in epilepsy.
Current findings on cannabinoids indicate a move towards application of stronger potency plant substances. These plants would have greater levels of THC and lower levels of other cannabinoids, specifically cannabidiol (CBD). Application of this form of marijuana is said by some people to give off greater effects for mental health and lesser therapeutic advantages. This is likely because THC interacts with CB1–the cannabinoid receptors found in the central nervous system (i.e. the brain and spine).
This current line of research evaluated the cannabinoid content of 206 marijuana extracts taken by the police from street users in Australia. It turns out there was a high THC content and low CBD content. A little bit of cannabigerol (CBG) was also found. This is bad for public health as THC is the psychoactive part in cannabis and high quantities leads to humans potentially developing psychosis.
Some restraints communicated in the data shown here should be taken into account. Because of commercial restrictions, researchers here could not amass a large amount of marijuana. However, researchers did make sure the extracts were obtained from the right places. While these results are cross-sectional, the method that is reported here is greatly in line with that of international solutions.
There are some things that help researchers know the trends and the effects of a cultivation method on a cannabinoid profile. These include:
Overall, this is good news for patients who need medical help to control seizures. Ideally this cannabis-based treatment will improve the quality of life for patients will varying forms of epilepsy. Medical marijuana has fewer adverse events and side effects than conventional treatments with an increased risk. Marijuana-based treatment is being slowly accepted as a safe and effective method for reducing seizures.
The food and drug administration (FDA) approves the use of a cannabis-based drug, from GW Pharmaceuticals. Drug enforcement is carried out on the state and the national level. Be sure to follow your pertaining laws to assure you are not conspiring in illegal activity. Be sure to communicate with your doctor before starting a new treatment plan.
