As cannabis becomes legal in more parts of the United States and more acceptable in general, ordinary men and women are starting to wonder what cannabis could do for them. For many people, the idea that cannabis could help with weight loss is very attractive.

It’s believed that 45 million Americans go on at least one diet each year. Furthermore, it’s thought that around half of that figure find themselves attempting two or more diets per year. However, studies also show that approximately 95% of diets fail.

These figures paint the picture of a nation of people who are becoming more conscious of their health, and the role that weight plays in that. It is also indicative of a culture which places immense pressure on women in particular, but men too, to be a certain size.

Unfortunately, the rate of failure is enormous and proves that trendy fad diets simply don’t deliver on the promises that they make. This is one of the reasons why people are so interested in the idea of cannabis as a weight loss aide.

Does Cannabis Help With Weight Loss?

While there are some studies which suggest that cannabis could help with weight loss, the integrity of these studies has been questioned. This is because these studies have mistaken correlation for causation, or failed to allow for the difference between the two.

For example, the rate of cannabis use are much higher in the state of California than they are in many other states. Incidentally, the rate of obesity is much lower than in other states. While it may seem that this means that cannabis use leads to a lowered risk of obesity, it isn’t that simple.

California is a state which has had a very definite health conscious culture for many years. The healthy living attitudes of Californians have contributed it to having one of the lowest rates of obesity in the United States. This was true long before cannabis was legalized in the state, and likely has nothing to do with cannabis use.

The fact that these studies have linked cannabis use with low obesity rates does not, unfortunately, prove that there is any causation in play. The example of Californians is just one of many, and something to be kept in mind when reading headlines which claim that cannabis can help shed the kilos.
