How Marijuana Can Help with Stress Incontinence

Marijuana Can Help Stress

Unlike what its name might suggest stress incontinence has absolutely nothing to do with psychological stress. The stress refers to is actually physical stress that may be placed on the bladder. This could be from running, standing up or even from having sex.

This type of incontinence is extremely inconvenient. The sufferer can, regardless of place and time, leak urine after the simplest of pressure on the bladder. As expected, this tends to result in anxiety and embarrassment for someone suffering from this condition. At the moment there is no panacea for stress incontinence.

Causes of Stress Incontinence

When the muscles that support the pelvic floor muscles and the other muscles that control the release of urine weaken the likelihood of stress incontinence increases. Before you urinate your bladder expands as it fills. Usually, the valve-like muscles of the urethra remain closed off as the bladder expands. This prevents the leakage of urine until you are ready to go.

When these muscles weaken, however, anything that puts pressure on the abdominal and pelvic muscles can cause equal pressure on your bladder and results in urine leakage. The causes of the aforementioned pressure include sneezing, bending over, lifting, laughing hard and the three other activities from above.

How Can Cannabis Help

At the moment the current treatments available are not totally reliable. Doctors usually recommend a host of remedies. These include:

  • Kegel exercises to strengthen the pelvic wall
  • Electrical stimulation to improve pelvic muscle fitness
  • Biofeedback to help with strengthening treatments and exercises.
  • Urine drainage bags to collect urine
  • Weight loss
  • For extreme cases surgery is the only treatment that will work

As the medical marijuana industry grows and becomes more accepted people are now looking into the benefits it could have on incontinence.

What Do Studies on Cannabis Suggest?

Research that included the permission of 112 Multiple Sclerosis patients, asked them how cannabis may have helped with the symptoms involving their urinary tracts. The patients reported between 55%, 64% and 59% positive changes
with the urgency of urination, micturition and incontinence issues.

Doctors now realise how cannabis may be used in helping treat urinary incontinence.

One recent study has stated that components of cannabis may lessen inflammation of the bladder and bladders of animals that seem to be overactive. Of course, clinical studies must be conducted on humans before we can be absolutely sure. The results so far, however, are encouraging.

Nearly 90% of those with multiple sclerosis will contract UTI’s within ten years of diagnosis. This can sometimes result in incontinence. For the most part urine drainage bags are put in place to help with this. More and more MS patients are self-treating with the help of cannabis.

Obviously, more research is needed and the research that has been done already is from a very narrow demographic. The results of said research are very encouraging, however. As the push for full legalization of cannabis on medical grounds grows so to does the opportunity for research to be conducted.

If cannabis can work on people with extreme urinary problems could it not be possible it will work on all urinary problems? As with everything if you do suffer from this condition do not rush into any treatment until you are as comfortable as possible. Always remember to talk to your doctor and do as much research as you can.
