Back in the 1950s, around 45 percent of Americans were smokers — today, that number is just 16 percent. There are lots of reasons for this sharp decline, but a new one is capturing a lot of attention recently: CBD.
For today’s smokers, the temptation to quit has never been greater. And many, it seems, are turning to CBD oil for a helping hand. Although studies are yet to show conclusively that CBD oil will help you kick the habit, there’s certainly enough data to make a compelling case for CBD as a stop-smoking aid.
In particular, there are 3 ways that CBD could help smokers to wean themselves off nicotine once and for all.
It’s well-documented that the routine of smoking cigarettes can be as addictive as the actual nicotine. A lot of long-term smokers say that when they try to quit, they find their hands become very restless and they get agitated by not having those little 10-minute breaks to pass the day. Sometimes these little changes to everyday life can be the most difficult to overcome for a smoker who’s trying to fight the urge to smoke.
Vaping can be a great alternative to smoking cigarettes, as it means your habits don’t have to change even if your smoking does. Vaping is now widely popular and vape stores are common all over the United States. CBD oil vaping has also really taken off and most cannabis and medical cannabis dispensaries stock huge ranges of CBD oil vape juices in every flavor under the sun.
However, some organizations like The National Center for Health Research are now warning people of the health problems that vaping can cause. So, while vaping may be a useful short-term alternative for smokers who are trying to quit, it’s not exactly free of risk.
Numerous studies have linked stress and anxiety with smoking, and most smokers claim that they smoke more when they’re feeling stressed and/or anxious. However, what many people don’t realize is that smoking actually causes stress in the body. The nicotine cravings that smokers experience during withdrawal have the same effect as stress, so by smoking they find themselves caught in somewhat of a vicious circle.
Researchers believe that CBD oil could hold the answer to this particular problem. Some studies have suggested that the oil can significantly reduce mood disorders such as anxiety. However others suggest that certain dosages may actually increase anxiety in some patients. The effect of CBD oil on anxiety isn’t fully understood just yet, but if the anecdotal evidence is to be believed then there’s every reason to believe that CBD oil could help smokers to feel calmer, more relaxed, and less tempted to smoke.
In 2013, a study was conducted to test the effects of CBD oil on nicotine cravings among long-term smokers. Researchers from University College London designed a double-blind study which involved two groups of 12 participants. People in the first group were given CBD inhalers, while the other group were given placebos.
Over the course of a week, the placebo group smoked just as many cigarettes as normal while the CBD group significantly reduced the number of cigarettes they smoked. The researchers found that this group smoked an average of 40 percent less than the placebo group. These findings are a strong indication that CBD could help people quit smoking and end their tobacco addiction for good.
