Arthritis is a group of painful and degenerative conditions which are all categorized by inflammation located within the joints. In turn, this inflammation causes stiffness. Here are many variations and types of arthritis. Osteoarthritis is one of the most common types of arthritis, which is progressive and considered as chronic pain. Rheumatoid arthritis is another common form of arthritis. 23% of Americans suffer from some form of arthritis. Which is rising steadily.

Symptoms of arthritis include joint pain and stiffness (usually in the morning time), redness, warmth, swelling, and a decreased range of motion and joint function due to wear and tear.

Current treatment options for arthritis are:

  • Immunosuppressants
  • Corticosteroids
  • Counterirritants
  • Analgesics
  • And the most common, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

How Can Cannabis Help with Arthritis

Through a range of different studies, each discovered that cannabis is a great anti-inflammatory agent. Two out of many chemical compounds within the plant known as CBD (cannabinoid) and THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) which are known to fight off pain and inflammation.

The Telegraph have stated that

“Synthetic cannabis-like molecule developed in lab could help osteoarthritis sufferers,”

Researchers from the University of Nottingham in the UK and from the University of Pittsburgh and Virginia Commonwealth University in the US came together to study cannabis and its therapeutic effects on treating Arthritis. They found that a chemical called JWH133 helps to cannabinoids and receptors CB2 and activated them. Which in turn might be able to reduce the pain associated with arthritis.

However more studies are needed because the side effects of marijuana are still unknown. If you wish to use medical cannabis as a form of treatment for any medical condition associated with pain and/or inflammation make sure that you first seek medical attention and advise before doing so.
