If you’ve ever suffered from neck pain before, you know how truly debilitating — and just plain awful — it can be. A hefty 85 percent of the U.S. population suffers from neck or back pain at one point in their lives, some of us on a near-daily basis. If you’re someone whose neck pain just doesn’t seem to go away despite all the doctor visits, prescriptions, and suggestions; then you’re likely living in misery and skeptical that you’ll ever find a solution.

A New Path to Pain Relief

In multiple recent studies, CBD, or cannabidiol, a compound found in cannabis, has been shown to relieve symptoms of variety of ailments and conditions — including chronic pain. With the CBD market estimated to grow to $2.1 billion by 2020, these products are poised to massively change the pain management industry.

Even now, more and more health professionals are recommending CBD to patients for pain relief as an alternative over more traditional methods. The degree to which CBD can relieve pain has been confirmed by multiple studies that show its effect on conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. A recent study of patients with fibromyalgia, revealed that 50 percent of participants taking CBD experienced great reduction in pain, while those using traditional methods saw scant improvement. If CBD can treat such acute forms of pain as these, it stands to reason that it could help alleviate your neck or back pain too.

More Evidence of Pain Relief with CBD

In 2003, a report by Clinical Rehabilitation examined pain that originates in the nervous system, just like neck pain does. The subjects in this study were suffering from pain related to MS, spinal cord damage, or limb amputation. In the study, 24 patients showed significant relief from CBD in comparison to the placebo, even when their symptoms were previously unresponsive to standard pain treatments. Other symptoms associated with these conditions, like muscle spasms and spasticity, were also improved.

When studying arthritis, a report in 2015 found that CBD extracts can offer significant benefits when applied topically to areas of the body experiencing pain. Though the research is nascent, it contains promising implications for topical treatment of neck pain, especially for those who can’t use CBD by ingesting it.

CBD and Neck-Pain Management

Most people who suffer from chronic pain often find that they benefit from a variety of approaches. Practices like stretching at home or physical therapy along with pharmaceutical drugs can offer consistent pain relief, but CBD just may be the ideal complement or even replacement to traditional methods. Since CBD oil is legal in all states, and has very few proven side effects, it’s worth investigating to see what advantages it may hold for you.

Remember that CBD comes in many forms, like vaporizing, ingesting, or topical application, and one may work better for you than another. In addition, doses can range from 1 mg to hundreds of milligrams — so check with your doctor to see which dose is right for your condition.
