Kristen Bell’s new post-workout solution for sore muscles is The Lord Jones High CBD Pain & Wellness Formula Body Lotion. CBD oil is made by extracting a specific compound, called cannabidiol, from the cannabis plant. It has been making headlines lately for its potential benefits in health, beauty, and wellness.

Post-gym, Kristen Bell posted to her Instagram story “I love my @thelordjones body lotion for my sore muscles after working out” over a photo of the lotion.

Are CBD based Products non-psychoactive and Safe?

In most of its prepackaged forms CBD is non-psychoactive, so you will not get high from using it or any form of body lotion. You would need to consume a huge amount of it to feel any psychoactive effects as most cbd oils only provide trace elements of THC which is the part of the cannabis plant that gets you high. Experts highlight that it may have pain-relieving abilities but they are still waiting for more clinical studies to confirm how, where and when these results can happen.

However, research findings from a report provided by The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine suggest CBD is effective for relieving chronic pain, as well as pain associated with cancer treatment, calming muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis, and arthritis. It may effectively alleviate pain because of the compound’s anti-inflammatory capabilities and the neurological nerve functions of cannabinoids.

There is a large difference, however, in ingesting CBD and using it on your skin. Doctor Ricardo Colberg, MA, a physician at Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Alabama has pointed out that topical creams cannot reach the muscle where the actual soreness is located. He further states that creams like the one mentioned by Kristen Bell distract the nerves from telling us there is pain there through different heating and cooling stimuli.

At the moment many different companies are jumping into the cannabis market and cannabis/cbd based lotions are great for both cosmetic and medical needs. Many of the lotions are made with a specific cannabis strain which will provide a certain percentage of CBD or THC for a specific desired outcome. It is then combined with other ingredients (coconut/olive oils) to make the texture but to also help aid in the lotions desired needs i.e. essential oils (lemongrass or arnica) are usually added to CBD oils to help provide the user with more essential minerals for pain relief.

If you are ever curious about what ingredients are included in a specific cannabis based product, simply check out the ingredients list on the product or the company’s website. Treat this purchase like you would any other and source based on your own needs an ethical preferences. For example many people may wish to avoid products which include palm oil due to the negative environmental impact it has on the world and its animals.

As mentioned before, there are only trace elements of THC in CBD/cannabis based products including those made from hemp. If you are worried about the potential health risks you can be assured most are safe but seek professional medical advice from a doctor before doing so.

Some negative side effects you may experience will most likely be based on the quality of the oil (purchase responsibly), its concentration (full spectrum) and how much you take (a few drops vs half the bottle). For example some negative side effects people have experienced range from stomach issues from taking too much resulting in a “runny tummy” and an increased appetite or tiredness.

Even though they’re considered virtually safe, however, there is currently no evidence to suggest that it is more or less effective than everyday competing products such as BenGay or Tiger Balm for example. However one thing is for sure that since cbd based topicals are new to the market they can be considerably more expensive than their every day counterparts.

It is valid to argue that science has had a hard time keeping up with the new trends and shifting laws of the modern cannabis age. Dr. Gerdeman goes on to suggest that the theory behind cannabis treatments is well and truly with us, but getting a factual basis to build our future treatments on is not. There are simply too many variables to consider to use cannabis for a wide variety of conditions and more responsible research is needed. After all if someone told you paracetamol cured the common cold you wouldn’t believe them would you?

While we have the theory, some clinical studies and human experiments provide repetitive findings each time. Such as CBD being able to educe more of our own endocannabinoid production to aid in tackling inflammation and “numbing” how we feel pain. These findings are based on CBD oil being taken orally therefore no such claim could be made about lotion based cbd oil. Yet.
