A muscle spasm is a sudden, involuntary contraction of a muscle. Anyone who suffers from muscle cramps experiences a sudden tight cramping in the muscle. This is known as a charlie horse. People who are older and/or are overweight are at a greater risk of developing frequent muscle spasms. Athletes are also prone to developing muscle spasms due to the amount of physical activity that they endure.

Cannabis for Muscle Spasms in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients High-profile personalities such as talk show host Montel Williams has long regarded medical marijuana as an effective treatment for symptoms relating to muscle spasms. Medical Marijuana has been approved for treating muscle spasms in the US due to the positive response from patients who’ve used it for this particular ailment. Marijuana has been proven to have anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation occurs when a muscle spasm occurs, so therefore marijuana counteracts this. Especially if the muscle cramp is due to injury.

Medical Cannabis has been proven to help relieve symptoms in MS patients, not just muscle spasms. Clinical trials and studies have discovered that medical cannabis can relieve chronic pain and inflammation. A 2008 study demonstrated that THC and CBD reduced the phenotype which is responsible for inflammation in MS. Through these studies experts and scientists discovered that the cannabis plants hold:

  • Anti Inflammatory properties
  • Antibacterial properties
  • Antiviral properties

All of which can be used to treat a wide variety of ailments whether they are physical or mental.

Due to these properties, CBD oil has gained a significant amount of popularity in the media. So much so that governments are taking the necessary steps to legalise the drug for medical use. However, it’s important to note that cannabis is still an illegal substance and purchasing and/or consuming the drug will result in jail time. So before buying CBD oil (whether it contains THC or not) make sure to look the laws and regulations regarding cannabis and CBD in your state or country.
