Headache on Top of My Head Can CBD Treat it

Headaches are one of the most common complaints there is today. They affect almost everyone from time to time. Who hasn’t experienced a headache? However, while most of us are lucky enough to only suffer from the occasional, mild headache there are many people who suffer from something much more serious. Chronic daily headaches can be debilitating. They can get in way of our working lives, our home lives and our social lives. They can be both mentally and physically draining at the best of times. And for those who suffer from them, they can have a severe impact on mental health and happiness.

What many people don’t realise is that there are a huge number of different types of a headache. In fact, some scientists estimate there may be up to 200 different types. Each type is caused by something unique, and many display very individualized symptoms. However, some are much more similar to each other and can be easily mixed up. This often leads to misdiagnosis and ineffective treatment. Migraines and sinus headaches are a perfect example.

Some of the most common headaches include:

  • Migraines
  • Cluster Headaches
  • Tension Headaches
  • Sinus Headaches
  • Hormonal Headaches

In an effort to try an distinguish between the different kinds, headaches have been categorized into two groups; primary headaches and secondary headaches. Primary headaches are headaches which aren’t caused by any underlying illness. Secondary headaches, on the other hand, have been caused by something else.

In simple terms, primary headaches are an illness whereas secondary headaches are a symptom of an illness. This is why it is so important to identify your headache type. If it is a secondary headache which is being caused by a tumour or some other life-threatening disease, the sooner you know the better. For this reason, getting to know your symptoms is crucial.

While everyone knows that a headache causes head pain, there are a great many other symptoms that people may be less familiar with. These symptoms include:

  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Auras (seeing bright lights, lines and spots where there are none)
  • Localized numbness
  • Food cravings or a total loss of appetite
  • Red, sore, puffy, teary eyes
  • Extreme mood swings
  • Insomnia

Furthermore, many people are unaware of the various forms of headache pain itself. While some headaches cause pain at the top of the head, others cause pain at the side of the head, behind one eye, in the cheekbones, or even as far down as the neck. Each a headache is unique and if the symptoms are recorded and analysed carefully, you can get the right diagnosis and treatment for you.

Why Does That Headache Keep Coming Back?

But how does CBD tie in with all of this? Well, as if life wasn’t difficult enough for chronic headache sufferers, the fact that the treatments available to them are largely ineffective just adds insult to injury. For those suffering from primary headaches, in particular, most are resigned to treating their pain with pain medications.

These over the counter medications are marketed as being specifically designed to tackle headache pain. However, the disappointing truth of the matter is that most have little or no effect on the pain. For pain relievers of real efficacy, patients are forced to use prescription medications. These might be more effective at tackling pain, but they come at a price. Many are packed with harmful chemicals that can cause their own set of health problems. So it’s no surprise really that people are starting to look for a safer alternative.

The hype surrounding CBD has grown and grown in recent times. A quick Google search and anyone can find any number of articles claiming any number of things about the magical healing powers of CBD. Unfortunately, a lot of what you read online isn’t true. However, this hype isn’t completely baseless.

While there are literally hundreds of years worth of anecdotal evidence to suggest that CBD is a powerful pain reliever, there is still little or no hard scientific data to back these claims. The lack of scientific data is largely down to the illegal status of cannabis across much of the United States. The legality issues have really limited the amount of research that can be conducted into cannabis, it’s products and its medicinal properties. While some studies have produced very promising results, they aren’t of a high enough scientific research standard to result in anything conclusive.

However, it’s not all bad news when it comes to using CBD for headaches. Researchers are very optimistic about the properties of cannabis for pain relief. They do know that CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid systems in our bodies to influence neurotransmitters. They believe this can have a real impact on pain, and there’s no real reason to believe that it can’t be used in the treatment of chronic headaches.

As there are a huge number of CBD products available on the online market today, the anecdotal evidence in favor of using CBD as a headache treatment is building rapidly. Sadly, the science just hasn’t caught up yet. Until it does, we cannot recommend its use. But we can tell you that there is a mountain of information on this and related topics online which may help to guide you further.

Whether you suffer from the occasional headache once or twice a year, or from regular cold stimulus headaches, CBD could be a great treatment option for you. In the meantime, please remember that not everything you read will be true. Cannabis is not legal everywhere so don’t break the law for the sake of a headache. And finally, don’t forget to keep your doctor informed of any home treatments you do decide to use.
