Can Cannabis Help Inflammatory Bowel Disease? | cannabisMD

Medical Cannabis and Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory bowel disease and medical marijuana treatment

Inflammatory bowel disease is a medical term used to describe two conditions; Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. These conditions are long term, chronic illnesses which are caused by inflammation of the gut. The symptoms of IBD can be very severe. They include:

  • Agonizing abdominal pain
  • Severe diarrhea
  • Uncontrollable weight loss
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression

While the current treatments for these conditions are less effective and less safe than patients need, research into the use of cannabis as an alternative treatment is ongoing. In fact, recent findings suggest that cannabis could have extremely positive effects on the symptoms of IBD.

How Does Cannabis Medically Work for Treating Bowel Diseases?

For patients with IBD, no cannabis-based treatment is currently available. However, this isn’t stopping countless IBD patients from treating their condition at home with cannabis. If their stories are to be believed, cannabis can have a hugely positive impact on the condition and the people who suffer from it.
