This article is going to discuss that awful tension (stress) headaches. Why do we get them? How do we get them? What can we do to avoid them and how can we treat them? Don’t worry because this article is going to tell you exactly that. Headaches are so annoying and they are also very common.

There are three types of tension headaches. These are:

  • Infrequent headaches – this is when someone only experiences tension headaches once a month or less. Generally speaking, tension headaches appear on the left side of the head and neck.
  • Frequent headaches– these headaches typically occur up to 15 times a month. These may last anywhere between a half hour or even over a couple of days.
  • Chronic tension headaches – People who experience chronic tension headaches may feel pain on both sides of the head rather just to one side. These are extremely painful and the more you suffer from this type of a headache the worse the pain becomes.

When someone has a tension headache their symptoms may be different to another. There are some similarities and warning signs though.

  • Pain in the head and neck muscles
  • Stiff neck
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Difficulty sleeping or insomnia
  • Sound sensitive
  • Light sensitive
  • Tightening around the head area

How And Why Do We Get Tension Headaches?

Tension headaches can be the cause of many things.Examples of these are:

  1. Stress, which is the number one and most common cause of tension headaches
  2. Lack of Food
  3. Lack of sleep
  4. Conflict or arguing (can relate to stress)
  5. Anxiety and/or depression
  6. Jaw clenching
  7. bad posture
  8. Too much time concentrating

If you are experiencing frequent headaches or any of the above you should consult your doctor or any other medical professional.

In order to try and prevent headaches, make sure that you improve your overall lifestyle, and make lifestyle changes slowly (not all at once as you may become bombarded). First, you should start off at improving your posture especially if you work in an office. Maybe instead of using an office chair opt for an exercise ball to sit on.

They have been proven to be great for improving posture and they are also fun! Start going to bed early and getting a good night rest. Make sure to eat regularly and never skip out on breakfast. Take regular breaks for a computer screen or any other job that is strenuous on the mind. Once all taken into account hopefully you will decrease your percentage of gaining a tension headache.

Common Tension Headache Treatments

There is a wide variety of tension headache tablets and treatments out there on the market. Most people will use painkillers to relieve their headaches. Painkillers like Ibuprofen, Aspirin and Codeine are all common treatments.

They work by interfering with “pain messages” from the nerve endings. Opiates work in a similar way to opium, which is extracted from poppy flowers (but these can be extremely addictive if not carefully regulated).

To try and relieve your headache try laying in a dark room for a while because your headache may be the result of sensitivity to sunlight or even artificial light. If you feel that you haven’t eaten in a while and you are suffering from a headache go get yourself so plenty of water and something to eat because your headache might be due to dehydration or lack of food.

Using CBD Oil To Treat Headaches

CBD has natural painkiller properties. Studies have been carried out on the plant showing that it has, in fact, medicinal properties. This study from 2015 shows that cannabis may have a role for many diseases and chronic pain is just an example of one.

The study states that “Supporting literature suggests a role for medicinal cannabis and cannabinoids in several types of headache disorders including a migraine and cluster headache although it is primarily limited to case-based, anecdotal, or laboratory-based scientific research.
