Want to try topical CBD? Here’s how it works and how to make your own! Such as, how to make your own headache relief oil with CBD and Eucalyptus oil. With the continued legalization of cannabis, cannabis no longer needs to simply be smoked in order to get the benefits of CBD. New trends have popped up to give cannabis use versatility to suit everyone.

Using it with vaporizers, edibles, hemp seeds, and oils are just some of the ways a person can get the CBD they need. Topical CBD is another such way. Creams, lotions, even lip balms, all infused with CBD gives a patient the same benefits delivered in a way that, for some, is much easier for their lifestyle. It’s as easy as using any other kind of lotion or cream, especially as you can now find medical cannabis providers more readily than ever before. The addition of eucalyptus oil makes these topical remedies even better. But why use a cannabis cream instead of smoking it in the more traditional way?

The Benefits of Topical CBD

Cannabidiol (otherwise known as CBD) can be a great help against many different ailments. From anxiety and depression to chronic pain and arthritis, people are now using CBD-rich medical cannabis for any number of reasons. There are unique properties when it comes to using CBD through the skin rather than through inhalation or ingestion. When taken orally, the cannabis affects the entire body. You’ll feel the effect everywhere and it often comes alongside with psychoactive effects as well. Sometimes it can take a little while to feel the effects.

Alternatively, when rubbed into the skin, the cannabis seeps into that specific area. It gives pain relief in a quick and concentrated fashion. CBD is easily absorbed into the skin, while THC (the psychoactive part of medical cannabis) is not as permeable. This means you get the benefits while skipping out on the “high” that is often associated with cannabis. Being able to apply it directly to your forehead lets the CBD reach a headache much more effectively. When mixed together with a powerful essential oil such as eucalyptus oil, the benefits of these kinds of topical remedies are strengthened even more.

The Benefits of Eucalyptus Oil

To get the most out of a topical remedy, the addition of essential oils is vital. One of the best pairings with CBD to fight off headaches is eucalyptus. Eucalyptus oil has a lot of different benefits, such as helping to treat skin conditions and reduce fevers.

For headaches, eucalyptus is known for treating against mental exhaustion and muscle pain. It aids in getting your blood vessels to relax and help circulation. It’s an anti-inflammatory that seeps into the skin to help against aches and pains. Plus, this oil gives a cooling and refreshing feel to your skin, which allows those with headaches to feel more at ease. It helps you to relax even more, which is an important part of getting rid of a headache.

DIY Medical Cannabis Headache Remedies

See which one of these works best for you.

CBD-Infused Oil

It doesn’t get much purer than this recipe. You just need some good oil and some cannabis. This particular recipe doesn’t use eucalyptus oil but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t get the job done. This infused oil can be used by simply rubbing the oil into the skin of the affected area, such as the forehead or temples. It’s also easy to adjust the strength to your own preferences.

  • 1 cup of virgin coconut oil
  • 14 grams of CBD (leaves, stems, and buds are all fine)

  1. Grind up your cannabis with a mortar and pestle or in a coffee grinder, then place the ground up cannabis into a small canning jar.
  2. Pour in the oil and put on the lid. Make sure it’s sealed tightly.
  3. Grab a saucepan and put in about 2 to 3 inches of water.
  4. Place the canning jar into the saucepan and turn on the heat. You’ll want the water to be just about to boil, but not actually boiling.
  5. Keep the water going like this for 3 hours. If you find that the water is evaporating too much, just add more as needed.
  6. Every hour or so, use tongs or a pair of oven mitts to take out the canning jar and give it a good shake. Make sure to be careful!
  7. After three hours have passed, turn off the heat and let the jar cool completely.
  8. (Optional) Repeat this process. It’s a good idea to repeat the heating procedure at least twice, but the more times you do it, the stronger the CBD effects will be. Go easy if this is your first time, and then adjust in the future.
  9. Strain out the oil and the cannabis with a cheesecloth, making sure to give the cloth a squeeze to get everything out. Store the oil in a covered jar and use it as needed.

Pain-Relieving Salve

A salve is a great way to carry over the benefits of any kind of herb directly into the skin. For this recipe, our herb will be cannabis, which can be easily altered in order to adjust the strength. Using this salve on your skin will not only help to fight off pain, it also moisturizes the skin.

  • 8 grams of dried cannabis (ground)
  • 1/3 cup of beeswax
  • 1 1/2 cups of virgin coconut oil
  • Several drops of eucalyptus oil

  1. Pour the coconut oil into a saucepan and slowly heat it at a low temperature.
  2. Add in your ground cannabis and keep it on low heat for about 25 minutes, stirring frequently. It’s important to keep the heat low so that you don’t burn the cannabis.
  3. Let the oil mixture cool before pouring it through a cheesecloth and into your chosen container. Squeeze all of the excess oil out of the cloth. Set this jar aside for now.
  4. In a saucepan, add your beeswax and slowly heat it up until it melts.
  5. Then slowly add your infused oil along with a few drops of eucalyptus oil. Keep stirring until all of the ingredients have mixed together thoroughly.
  6. Remove from the stove and let it cool completely before pouring it into your choice of container.

Relaxing Body Butter

One way to ensure headache relief is by simply relaxing. Not only will this recipe help fight away the pain, but it can also help your entire body to relax, aiding in the relief of your current headache.

  • 1/2 cup of virgin coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup of cocoa butter
  • 1/4 cup of CBD-infused oil
  • 10 drops of eucalyptus oil

  1. In a saucepan, melt together the cocoa butter, coconut oil, and CBD oil until smooth.
  2. Add in the drops of eucalyptus oil, making sure all of the ingredients are evenly distributed.
  3. Set the saucepan to the side and allow it to cool completely.
  4. Using a whisk or an electric hand mixer, whip up the cooled mixture until it begins to get a fluffy consistency. It may take some time but just keep at it until it begins to solidify.
  5. Once the mixture is at the desired consistency, store it into your desired container and used as needed.

Migraine Salve

This particular recipe provides good relief for those who suffer from migraines. It helps to get rid of any tension that could be making the migraine worse, while the CBD works to get rid of the pain altogether.

  • 4 ounces of virgin coconut oil (olive oil works as well)
  • 4 grams of cannabis (flower, buds, stems, and leaves are good choices)
  • 1 ounce of beeswax
  • 1 grams of valerian root
  • 1 grams of willow bark
  • 3 to 5 drops of eucalyptus oil

  1. Take your coconut oil and pour it into a glass canning jar. Then add in all of your herbs to the same jar.
  2. In a saucepan, pour in about 2 to 3 inches of water and then place your sealed canning jar into the saucepan, similarly to our first recipe.
  3. Heat up the water until it’s just about to start boiling and then keep the water at this temperature for 1 to 2 hours. The longer you let it simmer, the stronger it will be.
  4. Once you’re happy with the strength, strain out the herbs from the oil with a cheesecloth. Again, it’s good to squeeze out all of the excess oil from the cloth.
  5. Break up your beeswax and put it into a non-stick pan and begin to heat it at a low temperature. Pour in your infused oil and keep stirring frequently to help the beeswax melt into the oil. If you want a smoother consistency, drizzle in a little bit of castor oil until you’re happy with the smoothness.
  6. Once the mixture is thoroughly melted, add your drops of eucalyptus oil and stir it in evenly.
  7. Pour the mixture into a proper container and then let it cool completely before using the salve as you need.

Headache Relief is Just a Recipe Away

Plus, the best part about making the pain reliever yourself is that you can strengthen the dosage to suit your specific needs. All of these recipes are flexible so that you can increase the strength of the CBD properties as much as you’d like. On the other hand, if you find it to be too strong, it’s easy to weaken the recipe as well. Making headache remedies on your own can be a little more work than simply going off to a store and purchasing a bottle of aspirin. But a bottle of aspirin won’t give you nearly the same kind of benefits as these CBD and eucalyptus-enriched recipes will.
