Migraines are one of the most common kinds of headaches that there is today. Although there are over 200 different types of headache disorders, it’s believed that around 40 million people get regular migraines in the United States today.

In a recent study over 127 chronic migraine patients were given a mix of both cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). There were two phases to the study. The first group were given 200mg of a various dose of both CBD and THC. After just 3 months, the majority of participants noticed a 55% reduction in pain.

In this study, patients who suffer with migraines were administered a THC/CBD medication, or another drug called amitriptyline. The researchers found that the CBD/THC drug was marginally better at decreasing the regularity of the migraines than the other medication. It also found that the CBD/THC drug significantly reduced the pain of these migraines.

CBD: What Is It?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical which is contained in cannabis. When people hear the word “marijuana,” they generally think of a plant that causes substance abuse and addiction. In our brain and in other parts of our bodies we have cannabinoid receptors which are tiny loops of protein that affect how we feel pain.

Marijuana contains natural compounds called cannabinoids. When ingested, these cannabinoids search out the receptors in our bodies changing how they work as well reducing the pain signals.

Due to political and legal reasons, there hasn’t been as many tests conducted as we’d like to see, but there have been quite a few surveys done all telling us that CBD has a greater effect on reducing pain and preventing migraines than your standard prescription given to you by your local doctor.

Those that have suffered from migraines understand the pain is extremely severe. It can seriously affect peoples lives by restricting them from having normal daily lifestyle and from going to work.

As a result of needing immediate pain relief, most patients go for powerful opioid medications to get rid of the pain however in the US this can lead to serious negative side effects such as addiction.

This can also potentially lead to hard drug use in the future as peoples health care plans stop providing the original medications. Hard drug use provides a last resort for relief. Further more, regardless of which drugs they are, opiate/hard, they can also impact on the digestive system as well as the liver and kidneys which can lead to fatal out comes. Thankfully more powerful natural remedies such as cannabis are providing more relief with fewer to zero side effects.
