Each one of us has suffered from some form of a headache at least once in our lifetime. TThere are various types of headaches. Primary headaches include cluster headaches, migraines, and tension-type headaches. There are two categories for a headache. These are:

  • Primary Headaches
  • Secondary Headaches

Primary Headaches

A primary headache is caused by the overactivity of pain-sensitive receptors in our brain, or by the chemical activities that affect the nerves in our head. The examples of a primary headache are:

  • Cluster headaches
  • Migraines
  • Migraines with aura
  • Tension and trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia or TAC

Migraines without Aura is the most frequent type of migraine. It’s a moderate to severe headache pain accompanied by nausea, fatigue and increased sensitivity to sound. A tension headache causes constant pressure, aches and pains in the head. These pains range from mild to moderate pain. Most primary headaches are not a symptom of an underlying illness. They are an illness in themselves.

Secondary Headaches

A secondary headache may be a caused by symptoms of a disease that can activate our pain-sensitive nerves. A secondary headache can vary in severity. Most possible causes of a secondary headache are:

  • Sinus infection
  • Vertebral dissections
  • Blood clots
  • Brain aneurysm
  • Brain tumor
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Dehydration

The types of a headache that fall into this category are:

  • External compression: Is the result of pressure from wearing headgear
  • Ice cream headache, commonly known as “brain freeze”: Is caused by a sudden cold surge towards our nerve resulting in a sharp pain in our brain
  • Rebound headaches: Is the result of overuse of pain medications
  • Sinus headaches: The inflammation and congestion of the sinus area can cause a sinus headache
  • Spinal headaches
  • Thunderclap headaches

What Headaches Cause Pain at the Back of Our Heads?

A headache that is felt in the back of our head can be a dull, throbbing pain or even a sharp, aching pain from the base of our head, neck, and scalp. The different types of a headache may vary in severity and location. These headache types are:

  • Tension headache
  • Dehydration headache
  • Cervicogenic headache

Tension Headaches

A tension headache is one of the most common types of a headache that you can feel from any part of your head. It presents as a constant ache or pressure that you may feel that varies from mild to moderate pain. A tension headache can also be felt in the back of the head and neck, resulting in a squeezing and excruciating pain.

Dehydration Headaches – A dehydration headache is caused by the lack of fluids in our body resulting in a mild to severe pain in the back, front or just one side of the head. Bending your head side to side or even up and down may worsen the pain that you can feel from a dehydration headache.

Cervicogenic Headaches – If you ever had a cervicogenic headache, you are more likely to suffer from a disorder in your cervical spine. A cervicogenic headache is caused by another disease that you can feel from the back of your head and the stems from joints at the top of your neck. If you experience this kind of a headache, it’s best that you talk to your doctor as soon as possible.

Medical Cannabis as a Cure or Prevention for Headaches

Medical cannabis is one of the most groundbreaking discoveries in the world and is also one of the most controversial treatments in the medical world. Some studies prove that cannabis has a place as a medicinal drug. Medical marijuana has pain-killing properties and can be used to treat many diseases that cause chronic pain. Since our bodies contain natural cannabinoids that are produced by endocannabinoid receptors, the role of medical cannabis is to encourage our own receptors to produce even more natural cannabinoids that fight inflammation in our body. CBD is known as cannabidiol.

This is one of the chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant. Studies conducted that CBD oil acts as an anti-inflammatory. This means it reduces the inflammation and pain caused by a headache in the back of our head, making it one of the best treatments for headaches. Symptoms associated with having a headache are:

  • Stiff neck
  • Nausea
  • Throbbing pain in the head and neck muscles
  • Heighten sensitivity to light, sound and smell

One of the main factors as to why CBD is the best choice for preventing the inflammation or pain caused by a headache is that CBD has little to no side-effects. The side-effects of using CBD are minimal and have no long-term effects on the body. Some CBD users noted that they experienced:

  • Dry mouth because it affects the saliva produced in our tongue
  • Dizziness and lightheadedness can also be felt after taking a higher dosage of CBD due to a small drop in the blood pressure

If you want to avoid pharmaceutical drugs to relieve pain from your headache, you can opt for medicinal cannabis. If you wish to try cannabis as a form of treatment for any ailment, including headaches, it’s vital that you talk to your doctor or any medical expert on the topic. They will advise you on methods of consumption, dosing/ratios and strains. It’s important that you also check your country’s and states laws regarding the cannabis plant to avoid breaking the law.
