Patients Out of Time hosted a conference back in April 2010 in Warwick, Rhode Island. Raphael Mechoulam is an Israeli professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel and an organic chemist. Mechoulam’s research and study is concentrated on the chemistry and pharmacology of cannabinoids and has published more than 350 scientific articles on the topic. On the topic of Neuroprotection, the disorders include:

  • Neurodegenerative diseases
  • Stroke
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Acute management of neurotoxin consumption

Raphael Mechoulam states, that although our immune system protects many found needs, it doesn’t protect all of them, so he and Professor esther shohami a pharmacologist works on brain trauma studied to find if e cannabinoids are involved in Neuroprotection during brain trauma.

Raphael Mechoulam went ahead to try and find out whether the endocannabinoid system is involved in vasoconstriction (the constriction of blood vessels, which increases blood pressure.) And the answer was yes, it can relieve the vasoconstriction.

Mechoulam said that

“Our body is stingy, it tries to use whatever it has for as many situations as possible so we thought, and maybe this is what’s going on with cannabinoids as well”.

He talks about examples on how the human body acts to the cannabinoid receptors and also through molecules that are very closely related to cannabinoid like molecules that do not bind to the receptors but act as protective mechanisms.

Machoulam’s overall study and research has indicated that he cb2 receptor is an excellent protector against closed head injury and protects our brain.

Raphael Mechoulam explains that the compounds that he has used to try and find a solution to protecting the brain, hopes that these compounds have the potential to become drugs that will protect us against neurological damage.
