Missy explains that Oliver’s birth was difficult due to the fact that he suffered a stroke before he was born. This resulted in Oliver developing what’s known as a brain stem injury. This means he now has a number of difficult to treat medical conditions including seizures. Missy has tried to gain access to medical marijuana to help her son but is unable to because the drug is illegal in New York State. Missy is not alone in her fight. Kelley Lord the voice-over says that,

Within the last decade there has been a major push from citizens and activists across the United States to legalize medical marijuana with 22 states have legalized the drug for medicinal usage the spotlight turned to New Yorkers who have rallied behind the compassionate care act which would eventually make New York the 23rd state to legalize medical marijuana.

Miss hopes that in the next 5 to 7 years, marijuana will be legal on a federal, medical level.

The problem is, Oliver doesn’t have 5 years, I don’t know if Oliver has 1 year.

Missy brought this to Dean Skelos attention, who represents her district in New York. He heard her story and story of other children and people with conditions like Olivers.

Dean Skelos said,

Medical Marijuana has the capacity to do a lot of good for a lot of people who are in pain and who are suffering some of these cases are the most heart wrenching cases you’ve ever heard you’re dealing with children, children with epilepsy, babies.

In the NYS Senate, Dean Skelos used Oliver as an example to vote yes on the legislation, and the bill was passed.

Missy says

a tremendous weight has been lifted this step has lifted you know the biggest biggest hurdle right out of the way so we’re very hopeful.
