If you’re living with atopic dermatitis, you probably don’t need to be told what a (literal) pain …
Eczema is an incredibly common skin condition, affecting more than 30 million Americans according to a 2007 survey. While there are a number of types of eczema, most cases are atopic dermatitis, which primarily occurs in kids 5 and under. Its causes aren’t definitive, but eczema symptoms may stem from poor circulation, immune system malfunction, genetics, and contact with allergens. Symptoms can vary but primarily include itchiness, dry skin, red or brown patches, bumps, rawness, and cracks in the skin.
Many people diagnosed with eczema grow out of it as they age, or only experience symptoms in infrequent flare-ups. For those who need ongoing treatment, though, eczema can sometimes be a frustrating condition to manage, as it’s often triggered by environmental factors. Prescription and over-the-counter creams can help reduce swelling and redness, as well as the urge to itch. Other treatments include oral medication, light therapy, wet wrap therapy, and, of course, avoiding substances that have caused flare-ups in the past.
Cannabis or hemp-based treatments may also be therapeutic for inflammation, pain, and itching (they’re also antimicrobial). At cannabisMD, we aim to provide you with updated research and thoughtful articles on how medical cannabis, hemp, and CBD may have the potential to treat eczema and other skin conditions.
