Cold sores are embarrassing, they’re painful, and annoying. Treatments for cold sores have traditionally been unreliable, but …
Cold sores are inflamed blisters that appear on the mouth, lips, nose, and chin. They’re caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), a relative of the virus (HSV-2) that causes genital herpes. Cold sores typically pass through a few stages, which include an itching, tingling, or burning sensation; the emergence of blisters; and the bursting of the blisters, which leaves open sores that ooze and crust. Sometimes outbreaks can also include symptoms of fever, sore threat, headache, and muscle aches.
The virus is passed through close, person-to-person contact and is most contagious when blisters are oozing and crusting, though the majority of people who have the virus never experience cold sores.
Cold sores aren’t curable, but there are a wide range of medications available to prevent and treat outbreaks. Doctors might recommend an antiviral drug in the form of an oral pill or cream.
Research suggests marijuana-based tablets, CBD creams, and lotions might also be helpful in fighting the herpes virus and treating cold sore inflammation, thanks to the anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and even anti-viral properties of cannabis.
