Arthritis and Medical Marijuana

Arthritis is a well known inflammation disease that leads to joint discomfort and pain. The inflammation can affect just a single joint, or several of them. There are over a hundred different kinds of arthritis, although the two most common are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

At present, it’s thought that over 40 million Americans are suffering with arthritis everyday. Perhaps most surprisingly, half a million of these are children. The exact causes of the disease are still unknown, although researchers have linked it to certain risk factors.

The current treatments for arthritis rely heavily upon conventional pain medications. Unfortunately, these drugs can cause unpleasant side effects, such as ulcers and medication overuse headaches.

Researchers have found promising results in treating arthritis with CBD oil, which they believe to be not only as effective as traditional medications but also much safer.

The Research on Arthritis and Cannabis

There has been a significant amount of research into the effects of cannabis on arthritis. One study created arthritis like symptoms in rats and mice. They then treated these animals with either a treatment of cannabis or a treatment of placebo.

After a week they noticed a significant difference in the behavior of the ones with the cannabis compared to those with the placebo. The ones who received the cannabis treatment were able to walk around more freely and maintain higher levels of energy for longer than the others.

Another study looked at a group of people who suffered from arthritis. Once again they were broken into two groups and given either a placebo or a treatment of marijuana. Over the course of the study the ones who took cannabis felt less pain and were able to sleep better.

More research is needed into the potential effects of cannabis on arthritis symptoms. More specifically, more large scale, long term studies are required to produce truly reliable findings. However, the results which have been produced so far are sufficiently promising to inspire much hope for the future of cannabis-based arthritis treatments.
