Social anxiety is an anxiety disorder (SAD for short) aka social phobia. It is the general fear of being evaluated and judged negatively in social situations and interactions with other people. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States of America. These disorders affect roughly 40 million adults (18.1% of the population every year).

It’s important to know what anxiety is before you start to use CBD as a form of treatment. As for Social anxiety disorder, it is equally common among in men as it is in women. Generally one starts to suffer from SAD by the time they turn 13. However, there are a set of complex factors that could lead to SAD at any given moment in someone’s life. It is likely to arise from environmental and biological factors. Below are three factors that can contribute to social anxiety.

  1. Social anxiety can be developed through parenting. Parents who are overprotective and controlling their children and/or model anxious behavior in social situations affect the child due to the fact that they learn from this behavior.
  2. The amygdala is a structure in the brain, has a role in controlling the fear response. People who suffer from social anxiety may have an overactive amygdala.
  3. Genetics can play a role in those who suffer from anxiety. Often people who suffer with it generally have other family members who suffer from it too. However, it’s unclear how much is from genetics and how much is through learned or forced behavior.

Other risk factors of social anxiety are negative experience or experiences throughout life such as trauma, abuse or family conflict. If you develop a condition such as acne, gaining weight or have a stutter, it can cause attention to be drawn, or so you think. In situations like this, self-consciousness is increased, making social anxiety trigger.

Treatments for Social Anxiety

Cognitive behavioral therapy or medications (sometimes both) are commonly used to treat social anxiety. In Cognitive behavioral therapy, the overall goal is to usually gain more confidence in yourself and to utilize specific skills that you’ve learned through therapy itself such as facing fears and how to deal with anxiety episodes such as anxiety/panic attacks.

If your doctor diagnoses you with social anxiety, he or she is more than likely to prescribe you anti-depressant medication such as

  • Sertraline (Zoloft)
  • Fluoxetine (Prozac)
  • Paroxetine (Paxil)

These, however, are not the quick fix that many people think they are. In fact, anti-depressant based medications can make the condition worse before it starts to get better and can take anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks for them to properly work. Also, its common for anti-depressants to have side effects over long-term use, and its usually recommended that you don’t take them over a long period of time. As a result, people are starting to look into other alternative methods to treat anxiety disorders such as social anxiety.
