Recent studies have been conducted on human subjects to test whether or not cannabis could be used to treat those with Alzheimer’s disease. It was believed that cannabis use was a cause to short term memory loss, however, there is now evidence that it may actually protect your memory.

Within the video attached, scientists have carried out experiments on mice. It later proved that the cannabis derivative known as cannabidoil (or popularly known as CBD), could prevent the progression of memory loss or Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most popular form of dementia which effects 47.5 million people worldwide and is a growing phenomenon. So much so, that this figure is set to quadruple by 2050. With current medication merely reducing the effects of dementia, there is no set cure available. This is why it is important to trial other possible forms of medication, such as the use of cannabis.

The two main compounds found in the cannabis plant are THC and CBD. Both contain therapeutic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant values. The importance of these qualities in regards to Alzheimer’s disease is due to brain inflammation being a major contributor towards the disease. Certain studies found that along with the fact that THC can remove the toxin’s proteins within the brain, but it also acts like a protective shield towards the nerve cells, which can help them to survive.

With the use of cannabis, it can also make life that bit easier for the patients suffering from Alzheimer’s. Cannabis has been suggested that it can help with improving appetite, improving sleep and lessening agitation. There are very little side affects that follow in comparison to pharmaceutical drugs that can damage the kidneys etc. and is safe for adults and seniors to consume.
