Does Marijuana Help If You Already Show Early Signs of Alzheimer’s?

Medical Cannabis as Alzheimer's Treatments

If you keep on forgetting things you might have a problem. Alzheimer’s Disease is a cognitive disease and is the common cause of dementia. Dementia is a type of cognitive disease that can affect your memory, thinking and behaviour. Alzheimer’s Disease or AD is an irreversible brain condition that slowly destroys your mind and gets worse over time. Alzheimer’s Disease is commonly first experienced by elderly people in their mid 60’s.

The early signs of Alzheimer’s disease depend on the person. Some can suffer from memory problems called mild cognitive impairment or MCI. MCI is linked to a difficulty of movement and impairment of the senses. However, in recent studies, experts suggest that CBD oil from cannabis shows promising results in treating Alzheimer’s Disease.

If an older person has an MCI, he or she is more vulnerable to developing Alzheimer’s disease. What are the early signs of Alzheimer’s disease? If you have Alzheimer’s disease, you will experience a decline in vision, vocabulary and word finding. An AD patient also has troubles learning or remembering new information that results in frequent questioning and even repeating the question over and over again.

They also tend to get easily distracted and forget what they were doing before their attention was diverted. An Alzheimer’s patient can experience forgetting a recent event or misplacing items or even being lost in a familiar surrounding. They also experience behavioural changes such as increased confusion, changes in mood and a decline in reasoning that hinders their daily work. The worst outcome is that they rely on other people for even the smallest task that they used to do.

Diagnosis and Treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease

There is no examination for Alzheimer’s disease. Doctors can only check the symptoms a patient is experiencing before diagnosis. Patients undergo cognitive assessment, where they are asked a simple question, like where are they now, what year or even when was their date of birth.

There is also genetic testing to see the possibility of a person to have Alzheimer’s disease. However, the genetic testing result can be somewhat unreliable. Treatment for Alzheimer’s disease is still unknown, but there is a remedy for the symptoms. Further study to understand the condition is needed and the only way to guarantee if a person has Alzheimer’s disease is by autopsy.

Marijuana as a Help for the Early Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease

The use of medical marijuana is first prioritized for treating different inflammatory diseases, not really for a cognitive illness. However, some studies like in depression or anxiety prove the potential of medical cannabis. With its compounds such as THC and CBD that latch themselves to the body’s endocannabinoid system.

The endocannabinoid system has receptors called CB1 and CB2 that can be found in your gastrointestinal tract all the way to your nervous system. Alzheimer’s disease is possibly the result of a beta-amyloid buildup in your brain. Some studies conducted on the THC compound of medical marijuana have shown that it can slow down the production of amyloid.

The beta-amyloid deposits themselves in the nerve cells one of the significant finding in the brain after an autopsy. Even with the controversies that medical cannabis can affect the brain health, small doses of THC and CBD promotes neurogenesis.

Neurogenesis creates new nerve tissues in our brain and not only medical cannabis can promote neurogenesis, but it also has lots of antioxidants that can help with the Oxidative stress we experience from ageing. As we age, we suffer from oxidative stress, with the help of antioxidants the blood produces more oxygen to be delivered throughout different organs and especially to our brain.

Unlike THC psychoactive property CBD does not directly affect the receptors, it activates different receptors for an increase of medical benefits. Although not having enough reliable evidence to prove the use of CBD and THC for treating symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease there is still a possibility that CBD can slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Nevertheless, until further experiments and evidence to prove the potential of CBD for treating Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, there is still no cure for them.

Using CBD oil or CBD concentrates can possibly help with preventing dementia, mainly because there are studies on how CBD helps with brain health especially with regards to depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. It can be postulated that the use of CBD oil can prevent the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

In conclusion, because the cause of Alzheimer’s disease is not clear enough a treatment is very difficult to develop. With no cure, there are some medications that can regulate or slow down the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Without further studies and evidence the use of medical cannabis is not yet proven to be effective in treating dementia.

However, we should not forget that it has the potential to slow down the rate of growth of Alzheimer’s disease, especially the overall production of beta-amyloid plaques. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive and irreversible illness that can lead to death for older adults, although some younger people can experience having Alzheimer’s disease the majority of victims are still people in their 60’s or older.

If you have a family member or a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, don’t ignore them, once you notice symptoms bring them to a doctor. Finally please remember don’t just pity them or get irritated with them they need attention and understanding because Alzheimer’s disease is deadly.
