Addiction VS Compulsion

- A spontaneous desire to act
- Temporary out of control moment
- Psychological conflict
However, compulsion is not considered a higher-order cognitive process. The person under duress will most likely act on a simple but intense urge. Repeatedly washing your hands is a compulsion that will not give you any satisfaction. Whereas in addition, there’s the desired effect that needs to be satisfied. That’s why preoccupation in the behaviour occurs and usually leads to the loss of control, regardless if they suffer from negative consequences.
The Concept Of Addiction
These are five elements of addiction listed below:
- Engagement on the behaviour to achieve the desired effect: This refers to the motives of the said addiction: pain reduction, arousal manipulations, fantasy, or to effect enhancement. There are two serving motives. These are Hedonistic (substance use disorder (drug abuse), gambling and sex), and Nurturant (work addiction, compulsive helping, exercise, love, and shopping). The common function of this is to shift a subjective experience.
- Preoccupation with the behaviour: This idea refers to the psychological withdrawal in where tolerance (the need to engage) and withdrawal (discomfort due to an abrupt termination of the addiction) plays as its general concept. They give excessive time and thoughts on the planning to engage in their addiction or recover from it than any other activities available.
- Temporary Satiation: The feeling of the urges to be not operative or “shut down” only to come back soon. Also referred to as the psychological reversals which are classified as a mental illness. It appears to be on “seeking mode” when frustrated and “avoidance mode” when satiated.
- Loss of control: The third one seems to be crucial for this element because when the craving was not satiated, the response will be more automatic. There are two key words here: incomplete memory and impulsiveness. Incomplete memory refers to the harmful consequence of producing a positive emotional response. There are recovering addicts who’ve noticed their addiction as illogical, nonsensical, and disordered because they are now sober. Impulsiveness on the other end refers to the spontaneous urges to engage in their habit, which usually leads to the loss of control and behavioural control. The temporary satiation proves to be just a hiatus for them.
- The feeling of negative consequences: The turning point where addicts are turning away from their addiction is when they finally suffer from it. The negative consequences of addiction include:
- Physical discomfort
- Financial loss
- Social disapproval
- Decreased self-esteem.
How To Treat Addiction?
Treating addiction can be a long and grueling process. It’s important to recognize where it all started in the first place. Once you have discovered the beginning of the addiction, you can move onto these treatments.
