Cannabis makeup may come sound strange, but it’s set to become the biggest trend in beauty this year.

According to the guardian, some of the biggest beauty brands in the world have already begun to produce cannabis- and hemp-based makeup products, including Sephora and The Body Shop. But aside from the novelty factor, why should anyone trade their old favorites for cannabis-infused makeup?

As it turns out, there’s quite a bit of scientific evidence to suggest that these new products have a lot to offer. Here are four proven reasons why cannabis-infused makeup is causing such a stir right now.

1. Cannabis Is Anti-Aging

Researchers (Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences) have discovered that cannabis has antioxidant properties. In fact, it is now believed that cannabis is a more potent antioxidant than Vitamins C and E, which have long been hailed for their ability to prevent wrinkles. How much more potent? Well, so much that the United States federal government took out a patent (US6630507B1) for the antioxidant effects of cannabis.

Antioxidants fight the development of fine lines and wrinkles by killing off free radicals — little molecules in the body which mess with skin cells and cause the signs of aging. Antioxidants are found naturally in many foods, but it’s now thought that cannabis could be the most effective antioxidant of all.

2. Cannabis Is Acne-Fighting

Acne is caused by a bacteria in the skin which festers in pores clogged by excess sebum, dead skin cells, and other dirt and grime. Once the bacteria develops in the pores, it’s spread to other areas of the face extremely easily. The immune system responds to the infection with inflammation, pus, and other common symptoms. So, using makeup products that can effectively fight this bacteria seems like a great idea for anyone with acne-prone skin.

Cannabidiol is one of the main chemicals which are contained in the cannabis plant. Better known to most people as CBD, it’s been found to be a very powerful antibacterial. Its use in acne skin care products is becoming increasingly common as a result. And now, cosmetics brands are following suit with CBD-infused acne fighting products for all skin types.

3. Cannabis May Reduce Anxiety

Skin experts have long recommended that we reduce our anxiety and stress levels for the sake of both our minds and our skin. Many of us are familiar with breakouts during stressful periods in our lives, and the signs of anxiety on the skin can be painfully obvious. Although most of us live with some level of day-to-day anxiety, we can protect our skin (and our peace of mind) by using products that are infused with cannabis derivatives like CBD.

CBD has been found to effectively reduce anxiety in small doses. In theory, this means that using makeup products which contain it could help to lower your daily levels of anxiety, and benefit your skin as a result. Scientists are still studying the precise ways in which this works, but the early results are encouraging.

4. Cannabis Is Anti-Inflammatory

Inflammation of the skin is a really common problem. This is particularly true for those of us who suffer with eczema, or atopic dermatitis. Eczema is a chronic skin condition which is common among folks who also experience asthma and/or hayfever. It’s similar to an allergy and flares up when the skin comes into contact with triggers. Some of the most common triggers are foods, animal dander, and household chemicals.

The characteristic symptom of eczema is extremely inflamed, itchy skin — usually on the hands, forearms, elbows, and knees. Using an effective anti-inflammatory is useful for patients to relieve their symptoms and speed up healing. Studies show that cannabis appears to be very useful as an anti-inflammatory, so using cannabis-infused makeup products could help eczema patients to manage their condition.

The benefits of cannabis for the skin are beginning to become common knowledge as the plant gains mainstream acceptance. Scientists are still learning about the various ways that cannabis affects the skin, but they have learned enough to date to draw some fairly solid conclusions.

So, should you give cannabis-infused makeup a try? The choice is up to you, but if you’re looking for a reason to justify buying something new, the science does seem to be on your side.
