The business of skin care is one of the most rapidly changing industries on the planet. Each month, it feels like there’s a new trend that you’ve just got to try or a new ingredient that your skin couldn’t possibly survive without.

CBD retinol creams are the latest trend hitting shelves — and advice columns — near you. But what exactly are they? How are they different from regular old retinol creams? More importantly, what’s the point of using them?

You have questions, we have answers — let’s dive in.

What Is CBD Retinol Cream?

By now, CBD needs no introduction (but here’s one anyway). In a nutshell, it’s an oil which is extracted from the cannabis plant and has been proven to have a whole host of health benefits when used as a natural medicine.

Skin care brands have started to introduce CBD oil into their products following research that proves CBD can benefit the health and appearance of different skin types. From CBD eye creams to CBD face washes and face masks, it’s not hard to find a CBD skin care product to suit you. But what about CBD retinol cream? What’s it used for, and who can it help?

Retinol is an ingredient which is typically associated with anti-aging products. It’s actually a milder version of tretinoin, which is a prescription-only Vitamin A derivative. Tretinoin is very effective at reducing fine lines and wrinkles and the other signs of aging, including sun damage on the skin, as well as acne and other skin complaints. It can improve skin texture, support collagen production, and strengthen skin cells. For this reason, retinol is now a very common ingredient in many anti-aging skin care products like night creams, lotions, serums, and masks.

Adding CBD to standard retinol products has a 1+1=3 effect, as CBD can enhance the anti-aging properties of retinol while also adding new benefits. Some studies have found that using CBD as an acne treatment can be beneficial as it can help to regulate the production of sebum in the skin, and reduce acne as a result. Others have found that CBD topical products can reduce the symptoms of eczema, like inflammation and itchiness.

How Do You Use CBD Retinol Cream?

Although readily available over the counter and included in a huge number of skin care products, retinols can be very harsh on the skin. Using any retinol, including a CBD retinol, also significantly increases the skin’s sensitivity to damage from exposure to sun, UV rays, and blue light. Because of this, when introducing a CBD retinol product to your daily skin care regimen it’s very important to make sure you’re using a high-quality SPF product during the day.

It’s also vital to introduce your skin to a retinol product slowly. The higher the concentration of retinol in the product, the more careful you will need to be. It’s wise to begin with just a weekly use, and then build this up to daily use over the following weeks. If your skin experiences irritation during this time, take a break from the CBD retinol for a few days to allow your skin to heal.

CBD retinol creams can tackle a vast range of skin issues, including acne, dark spots, and the signs of aging. Both ingredients (Vitamin A) have been extensively studied and their effects on the skin are well understood by now. More than just a passing skin care trend, if you’re looking for a product which is likely to deliver noticeable improvements to your skin, this could be it.
