Red scars are usually new scars. When your scars are red is the best time to get it under control and treated. The redness is caused by residual inflammation of the newly healed tissue. Inflammation involves increased blood flow to the affected area and this can cause:

  3. Pain

If you can reduce this inflammation and promote healthy healing, you are more likely to have reduced visibility scarring and faster healing.

Step 3: Applying Acne Treatments

The way you treat scarring depends very much on the type of scars you’re dealing with.

Mild Scarring:
The two main treatments for mild acne scarring are microdermabrasion or chemical peels. Dermabrasion is the removal of the top layer of the skin (the epidermis) either using a laser or a specially designed wire brush. This is usually very successful, with between half and three-quarters of people who engage with this form of treatment reporting improvements in their appearance.

The skin is red and inflamed for several weeks after dermabrasion treatment and it is an avenue for infection, so a course of antibiotics usually accompanies it. After a few days, you should be able to use mild makeup to cover up the skin until it heals properly.

There are two main types of laser treatment, ablative and non-ablative laser treatment. Both of these techniques are used for mild to moderate scarring and are usually effective.

  1. Ablative treatment removes a small patch of skin surrounding the scar to promote new skin growth and return a more normal aspect to the skin when it heals.
  2. Non-ablative treatment uses lasers to stimulate the growth of collagen (one of the main proteins involved in scarring) in scar tissue, which seems to help it repair and grow into more regular and less unsightly scar tissue.

Severe Scarring:
Unfortunately, severe scarring needs more advanced techniques to treat them adequately. Which treatment you need depends on the type of scarring you have. Severe scars fall into three main subcategories:

  1. Punch
  2. Depression
  3. Subcision

Ice pick scars need punch treatments. The scar tissue is excised and the wound sealed up and healed. If they are particularly deep, they might need a skin graft taken from other parts of the body.

Boxcar scars, on the other hand, often need punch elevation treatments. This involves removing the middle of the scar and raising the underlying tissue so it can heal into smoother tissue.

Rolling scars often need the top layer of skin removing and blood allowing to pool beneath, forming a clot that raises the connective tissue and forms into smoother and more attractive tissue when it heals. This is called subcision and is usually followed by dermabrasion and/or laser treatments.

Only then can you begin to treat your existing acne as effectively as possible. Try to reduce the level of stress and triggers that are in your life.
