Acne is stressful and can cause self-esteem issues, so it’s perfectly natural to want to see an acne breakout end as quickly as possible. Fast may seem like a good idea, but remember that the skin healing process occurs at a fixed rate and shouldn’t be rushed. The best way to treat acne, quickly and permanently, is to look at what might be causing the problem and then work to address the causes.
There are a number of different kinds of acne. Click here to learn more about them.
Experts currently agree that a combination of a topical retinoid and antimicrobial therapy are the acne treatments of choice for almost everyone with acne. The combination of treatments is more effective than single therapies, targeting different factors that result in acne. The topical retinoid reduces abnormal skin shedding, gets rid of pimples and can reduce inflammation.
Benzoyl peroxide on the other hand is antimicrobial and helps to remove excess build up of dead skin cells which clog the pores. Finally, antibiotics have both anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. If you really want to know how to get rid of acne fast, this combination therapy may be for you.
Although the topical creams and spot treatments you can purchase in any pharmacy may help with general blackheads or whiteheads, these generally don’t completely target acne. More severe outbreaks and acne problems require combination therapies to thoroughly and permanently defeat the underlying issues. It can take a couple of months before acne significantly improves.
Often, effective treatments may appear to worsen the condition in the first week or two (especially redness and peeling) but these issues will subside and the skin will begin to improve in most cases. If not, you should consult a dermatologist to determine what changes to a combination therapy may be required.
There are everyday things you can do to improve acne or prevent breakouts as well. Wash your face with warm water and a mild cleanser in the morning and the evening will help reduce the buildup of sebum and dead skin particles on your skin. Squeezing or popping pimples may be tempting but doing it can lead to scarring. Choose oil free makeup to avoid clogging your pores and remove your makeup with a gentle cleanser each evening.
Many people are turning to home remedies to treat their acne. Applying small amounts of natural products such as witch hazel, essential oils such as tea tree oil, apple cider vinegar and baking soda have become popular. Although they haven’t been proven to prevent or cure acne, the limited research which has been conducted into their effects provides promise. None of these will work overnight but over time will improve your acne.
